Officer Watch with The Rifles cloth strap

Wristwatches first made their appearance in the British Army during the First World War; before that pocket watches were exclusively used in the military. Pocket watches were not practical in the trenches, and some early versions simply attached a wrist strap to a pocket watch. By the end of the Great War, wristwatches very similar to this one were standard issue, made by companies such as Borger, Smiths and Mappin & Webb. The large matt stainless steel ribbed case and large numbers give this watch a distinctly retro appearance, and it comes with a strap in the colours of The Rifles.
