Product Description

Hand made rarely comes in a more truthful form than from Tanner Bates. Provenance and tradition underpin company founder and leatherwork evangelist John Hagger’s approach to his craft and materials – an approach that is perfectly realised in the form of his notebooks. The Penloop Notebook is an opportunity to reconnect with the written word; a chance to place you thoughts and ideas somewhere infinitely more satisfying than the deadening digital realm. Beautifully handmade, using some of the world’s finest leathers, each notebook also comes with a replaceable interior, a matt black Caran d’Ache ball pen or mechanical pencil and free personalisation.

The Russia Kip leather is produced by J & FJ Baker & Co in Devon, Europe’s last remaining Oak Bark Tannery. Making this leather is a slow process, taking over 12 months at their tannery in Devon, using three specific tree barks (Oak from the Lake District, Willow from Somerset and Birch from France) and an ancient technique of dressing with dubbin and birch oil.

The smell is extraordinary and the feel luxurious; the leather is made using an old Russian recipe discovered in the 1970s, when a cargo of Russian hides was found aboard a shipwreck that had been at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Plymouth since 1786.
